FM Conway has been recognised as a Champion for Driving for Better Business, a Highways England programme that aims to help employers reduce work-related road risks and deliver improvements in work-related road safety.
We operate one of the largest HGV fleets on London’s roads and undertake highways work in close proximity to members of the public, so it is imperative that our activities are done in the safest possible way.
Driving for Better Business is a government-backed programme delivered in partnership with Highways England to recognise both the company and its supply chain, who have contributed notable improvements in the safety, customer experience and delivery of the network.
FM Conway has continued to innovate and develop to facilitate continual improvement in road traffic management systems (RTS), in order to reduce death and serious injuries related to road traffic crashes.
The RTS was designed to meet the requirements of, and be certified to the International Standard, ISO39001:2012, and FM Conway were one of the first in the world to develop and implement RTS to help the business ultimately eliminate risk from our roads.
Over the past 50 years, FM Conway, has made its name for its industry-leading network of asphalt manufacturing and recycling plants, as well as for its integrated and flexible infrastructure solutions as a self-delivering contractor. Furthermore, it is renowned for its operational and production facilities, including owning one of the largest HGV fleets that operate on the roads across London and the South East.
Often operating within close proximity to members of the public, it was imperative for the company that safety issues were addressed, including the procurement of safe vehicles; operation of vehicles; maintenance of vehicles; competence assessment and training of drivers; awareness and culture of employees and stakeholders; innovation and improvement in safety measures and the planning and implementation of fleet operations.
Since the ISO39001 system was introduced in March 2013, the year-on-year reduction in the number of road traffic accidents has amounted to savings of a quarter of a million pounds, as the RTS has greatly cut costs on insurance, claims, maintenance and repairs.
In respect to the safety of cyclists is where the system has made the biggest dent. In the five years since implementation, Conway’s 1,415 vehicles, which travel 35,375,000 miles each year, have only been involved in two minor incidents with bikes. A reduction of more than 80% from the five years prior to implementation.
